Back to Opportunities

Introduction

The Level 3 Apprenticeship in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools is designed for individuals who are already working in a school support role with greater independence and responsibility. It is suitable for those aiming to progress into advanced positions such as higher-level teaching assistants or specialist learning support roles.

This apprenticeship builds on the foundations of Level 2 and equips learners with the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required to make a greater contribution to teaching and learning. Learners will gain confidence in planning and delivering activities, supporting assessment for learning, and promoting inclusion and safeguarding practices.

Requirements

Assessment and What to Expect

  • Workplace-based assessment: Evidence is collected from the learner’s day-to-day role in school.

  • Direct observations: Assessors observe practice in supporting pupils’ learning, behaviour, and development.

  • Portfolio of evidence: Learners compile evidence such as activity plans, reflective accounts, and work products.

  • Professional discussions: Opportunities to demonstrate knowledge, reflect on practice, and link learning to the school context.

  • Knowledge assignments: Written tasks to underpin theoretical understanding of child development, safeguarding, and learning support.

Learners can expect ongoing support from an assessor who will visit the school regularly, provide feedback, and help plan evidence collection.

On successful completion, learners will be fully qualified to work as:

  • Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)

  • Specialist Learning Support Assistant

  • SEN (Special Educational Needs) Support Assistant
