At just 17 years old, Kelsey Newton has already shown remarkable resilience and growth through the Jobs Growth Wales+ Engagement programme. Joining PRP Training in May 2024, she faced significant personal challenges. Despite these barriers, Kelsey has flourished, becoming an inspiring example of what can be achieved through determination and support.

At first, Kelsey struggled with attendance and confidence, often preferring to work alone. However, with encouragement from her tutors and participation in group activities, she began to engage more fully, developing strong friendships and contributing to a collaborative learning environment. Over time, she grew into a supportive peer, helping classmates and contributing to a positive, inclusive atmosphere.

Her confidence has grown significantly. She has developed communication and digital skills, undertaken qualifications through Virtual College, and completed training in health and safety and customer service. These achievements have strengthened her CV and employability prospects. A key moment in her journey came when she independently attended and succeeded at her placement interview for Pembroke Leisure Centre — one of the first learners to do so. This proactive step impressed her employer and secured her a role that reignited her passion for fitness and wellbeing.

Kelsey’s growth extends beyond her own journey. She has become a role model for other JGW+ learners, demonstrating resilience, perseverance, and positivity. Her tutors describe her as proactive, committed, and inspiring to her peers. By taking ownership of her personal development plan and striving to overcome barriers, Kelsey has shown maturity beyond her years.

Being named runner-up at the B-wbl Awards is a recognition of her progress and potential. Kelsey is proof that with the right support and determination, young people can overcome adversity and build a bright future.
